Characteristics of the Han Dynasty
The Han dynasty was exceptional in the way that it created security with large armies, new technology, and iron skills. The large army of the Han empire helped keep security within and outside the empire. All men between the ages of 25 and 60 were forced to serve 2 years in the army. This effectively made the Han Dynasty unimpregnable, because there was always an army ready. They also made new technologies that helped the army. One of their inventions was the kite, which was flown above enemy lines at night. Attached were bamboo pipes which made a scary sound that meant “beware” the enemy troops would often run away in fright. The Han could win many battles with ease, and did not need to waste resources. This was a very clever invention to help them. They also invented the crossbow which helped them to win battles. This made it even easier to win battles. The Han Dynasty was very concerned with military strength, and these weapons enabled to achieve great mountains of success.
The Han Dynasty was also excellent at utilizing their natural resources, such as the rich iron deposits. They created iron armor which moved with the body, making it much easier to fight while protected. They also made iron swords. Because iron was stronger than traditional materials, they could make these swords longer, and this made warfare even safer, as they could be farther away from their opponents. The way that the Han Dynasty treated security was far different that any other dynasty, both with their amazing advancements and the new territory they conquered.
The Han Dynasty took care of it’s people very well. The government took care of it’s people, and medicine and technology improved the quality of peoples lives greatly. The government was in charge of many day to day operations, such as the maintenance of roads and making sure that there was enough grain stored in case of famine. This was a very smart thing to do (take care of the people) because it would prevent subjects from wanting to start a rebellions. Medecine also helped the populace, indeed, some of the medical ideas from the Han Dynasty are still used today in traditional Chinese medicine. The Chinese believed in Moxibustion, where they burned leaves on the skin of the sick/injured person(s). They also believed that a person became sick when the forces of Yin and Yang were not in balance in the body. Acupuncture would help find this balance. It is interesting that this idea is very similar to that of the Greeks with the four humors. Acupuncture is still prescribed today for certain injuries, so this ancient medicine must have had some effect. The new technologies that were developed during the Han Dynasty also improved the quality of life for people in the Han Dynasty. The chain pump is an excellent example of this. Farmers no longer had to carry heavy buckets of water up the banks of a river to their crops, they could simply pedal the machine. The iron plow is another good example of this. Farmers could plow more easily, as it would cut through the soil and no dirt would pile up on it. The Han Dynasties government, medicine, and new technologies took care of the people very well.
The economy was very strong during the Han Dynasty, thanks to technology, industry, and the government. New technologies such as the chain pump helped to create a stronger infrastructure. Farmers could produce more goods and did t have to worry about not having enough food. The salt drill also helped because salt was a major tradeable good. Salt could also be used to preserve fish, which could also be sold. Industry also helped with economic growth. The silk trade was blossoming, and with the help of a new machine, (spinner) silk became one of the most traded goods in China. The abundance of silk was helpful for other things as well. Other industries, namely the iron and salt trades, were also blossoming. It is interesting that all of these industries were controlled by the government, which brings us to my third example. The government helped economic growth in many ways. One way was by maintaining all roads. This made it easier to trade, which helped grow the economy. These are just a few explanations of why the Han Dynasty had a strong economy.
The Han Dynasty also had national unity. One example of this is technology. People were proud of the technology of their dynasty, and he they could work more easily. Another way the han dynasty promoted national unity was by warfare. All men were forced to serve at least two years in the army. This helped keep a large army, which helped protect the borders and was a symbol of national pride. The Han iron working skills were amazing, and also were probably a symbol of national unity. Yet another example of national unity during the Han Dynasty is provided by the government. Any man could become a government official, if they passed a test. This is one of the first examples of nobility and birthright not being important in government offices. It would certainly be a point f pride to have a family member be in the government, even though no me else had been in it. The thriving economy would certainly be a point of pride, and most of the economy was powered by the government. The Han Dynasty was exceptional in many ways, one of which national unity, a category in which it would certainly rank highly.
